I work in corporate America and my work building happens to be a very large building with over 50+ floors and bunch of people. You can go months before running into someone and they could actually work on your floor, weird I know. I personally don’t venture out to much or too far from my office but on occasions I will go down to our food court for lunch. On really nice days or when I’m feeling inspired walk to the Sushi place or other restaurants close by.
In my work suite there are only 12 people I work in close proximity with. One of the gentlemen is really nice; we speak to each other all time, crack jokes, etc. I thought he was the coolest. Until one day while taking one of those inspirational lunches I ran into him outside the building. I looked right at him smiled and was about to speak and he lowered his head. I thought WTF. I know he just saw me. But I went into denial mode and thought it best to give him the benefit of the doubt. Besides when I saw him later that day in our suite things were good as usual.
Exactly 2 days later I went to the food court in our building for some lunch and ran into this person again. The same thing happened. That did it for me. I came to realize he wasn’t speaking on purpose. That left me thinking why is it that some people do that? No offense but its always white people that do that. It must be some unspoken belief with some white folk that you only have to deal with black people in the work setting. Once they step outside that location they are just another black person you careless to deal with. Simply acknowledging this person that you work with 5 days a week is now forbidden. I had already known that some white people do that but I just didn’t think he was one of them because our fondness for each other seems genuine. One time I ran into a white female co-worker in a bank line at the grocery store and she didn't speak either. Just goes to show you who keeps it real with you no matter the location. In regards to him, I don’t think he is so nice after all but I still deal with him in the same manner. All that means is if I should ever run into him on the streets and he is in trouble I can walk by him and pretend I don’t know him either. See it all works out in the end.
